Day 2: Dunkirk to Droomkerke – Into the Heart of Flanders
Our second day of cycling on the Journey to Zero began with the sunrise in Dunkirk. The morning air was crisp, and the coastal town was just starting to wake up as we set off. The promise of new landscapes and the thrill of the open road propelled us forward, our legs still strong from the excitement of Day 1.
Leaving Dunkirk behind, we pedaled through the serene French countryside, where the rolling fields and quiet villages provided a stark contrast to the bustling cityscape of London. The rhythmic whir of our bike wheels on the tarmac became a soothing soundtrack as we made our way towards the Belgian border. It was a reminder of the simple joy of cycling: the freedom to move, explore, and experience the world at a human pace.
Crossing into Belgium felt like another milestone, a small victory celebrated with a shared smile and a brief coffee stop to take in the surroundings. The landscape began to change subtly as we entered Flanders, with its flatlands and winding canals. The towns we passed through each had their own charm, with cobbled streets and historic buildings that seemed to whisper stories of the past. Meeting lots of other cyclists all on their own rides and tours reminded us of the universal appeal of our mission. Sustainable travel and renewable energy are not just abstract concepts; they resonate with communities everywhere.
As we cycled towards Droomkerke, the day grew warmer, and with another strong wind at our backs the km’s seemed to melt away. Frank Dekker and I found a comfortable rhythm, we shared stories, laughed at the small challenges we encountered, and found inspiration in the journey itself. This ride is more than a test of endurance; it's a celebration of our shared commitment to a greener future.
Arriving in Droomkerke, a quaint village nestled in the heart of Flanders, we were greeted by the sight of traditional Flemish houses and the peaceful ambiance of rural life. It was the perfect end to a fulfilling day of cycling.
As we settled in for the night, our bodies tired but our spirits high, we reflected on the day’s journey. From the historic streets of Dunkirk to the picturesque lanes of Droomkerke, today’s ride reinforced the beauty of this adventure. Every kilometer brings us closer to Munich and Intersolar, but it also reinforces the importance of our mission.
With Day 2 behind us, we look forward to tomorrow’s challenge. Next stop Brussels. Thank you for following along with us and stay tuned as we continue to pedal towards a brighter, more sustainable future.
